The conclusion I reached during my competing years was the importance of the source itself the beans, which have been grown and handled with the intention of making a flavoursome, clean taste, and then combined with the art of roasting. Without this, a great-tasting cup is not achievable, even in the hands of a great barista. I gained a competitive edge by roasting my own beans, something very few were doing at the time. As one of the few women in a male-dominated space, competing and proving my skills was not only empowering but a defining part of my journey.
In 2012, I founded ARK Coffee in Takapuna, New Zealand, with a simple goal: to make exceptional coffee accessible to people in their own homes. After 12 fulfilling years running a café roastery, I made the decision to go fully online, allowing me to focus on what I do best: sourcing, roasting, and delivering outstanding coffee that’s easy to enjoy every day.
ARK Coffee Company was born from a story of transformation, one that began far from the coffee world. I started my journey wanting to become a professional dancer, training in the UK after moving from New Zealand at 16 with dreams of performing on stage. But when an injury ended that path, soon after graduating, I found myself lost and searching for a new purpose. Then, one ordinary day, a visit to a small specialty coffee roastery in Kagoshima, Japan the town where I was born changed everything. I tasted my first espresso crafted by a Japanese Barista Champion. Something clicked. I was captivated not only by the flavour but by the entire process. It was my first encounter with the world of Specialty Coffee. I slowly began to learn that Specialty Coffee was something entirely different from commodity coffee. It wasn’t just about the drink it was about the quality, the sourcing, the care put into each cup, and most importantly, bringing a better coffee experience to consumers. That is at the heart of Specialty Coffee. That moment sparked a new passion that would shape the next 20 years of my life.
I began working at that very roastery, immersing myself in the craft of espresso before transitioning to roasting. It was in roasting that I found my true calling. Over the years, I competed in Japan’s National Barista Championships (finishing in the top two) and traveled to coffee farms around the world, learning from some of the most respected professionals in the industry.
